Some questions I get asked again and again, so I started to prepare this page with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Please check it before you send me an email. It's faster for you and saves me time I can spend on improving my sites. Thank you.

Contacting me about this website:
Who is writing this website and is responsible for it?
- This website is a personal project of Armin Grewe. Unless noted otherwise all pictures and texts are written by me. I'm not a professional webdesigner/-writer, I work on this and other sites as a hobby in my spare time. To find out more about me and my other projects you can visit my personal website at www.grewe.co.uk.
What does "Gruss" mean? You used this word in an email to me.
- This is a simple one: It is German and means "Regards". In case you didn't know, I'm German (although I lived/live in the US and the UK for several years). And for the fun of it I decided to sign all my emails in German. Satisfied?
Can you send me more information about one of the topics on your site?
- I frequently receive emails like "I'm working on a project about Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Can you send me all the information you have?" or something along those lines. While I'm more than happy to answer questions (assuming I know the answer) and even fulfil some requests (assuming I have the material), there is no way I can fulfil such unspecified requests. I probably have more than a hundred megabytes of pictures of Charles Rennie Mackintoshs works. The same applies to pictures from the Isle of Islay. Not to mention the various books. And brochures. In other words: There's no way I can send anyone all of this.
Please be as specific as possible with your queries to make it easier for me to answer them. And keep in mind that I'm not running this site professionally, I'm running it in my spare time.
Why do a lot of the pages on this site look horrible in older browsers?
- Most of the pages on this site rely on style sheet technology for the design and layout. Older browsers, in particular Netscape 4, do not support style sheets and long agreed web standards. Hence the pages might look a bit strange (in regards to design and layout), although you should still be able to access the information. I've decided to not longer support non-standard compliant browsers.
Why is there advertising on some of the pages?
- While this is a personal project I do have to pay for the webhosting, bandwidth, online costs and tools to run the site. To recoup at least some of the costs I have decided to place limited advertising on some of the pages, currently this is through the Google Adsense program and the Amazon Associates Program.
Where can I find the Charles Rennie Mackintosh font you use on your website?
- The font I'm using is from ITC, but there are also other options: Please visit my Charles Rennie Mackintosh links page and scroll down to the "Shopping" section of the page, you will find the necessary links there.
Can you email me the Charles Rennie Mackintosh font you use on your website?
- No, I'm sorry, but I can't send you this font. I purchased this font from ITC Fonts and the licence obviously doesn't allow me to send it on. This would be software piracy. If you really need it I'm afraid you'll have to purchase it yourself. There are several links on my Charles Rennie Mackintosh links page. If you can't afford it at all, you can try searching the font archives for the "Chelsea Studio" font. It looks quite similar and seems to be freeware (no guarantee this is correct).
Can I use your pictures on my website/in my publication?
- With very few exceptions (and these are noted on the respective pages) all the pictures on this website are © Armin Grewe (that's me). That means you can't just use my pictures for your purposes. However, if you contact me with a request I'm usually quite open to them. In most cases I just ask for an acknowledgement and a link to my site, in particular if your project/website is a non-profit site and not in direct "competition" with my site.
Which camera/graphics program/other software do you use for your pictures?
- Quite a few is the quick answer. The longer and more detailed answers follows: Up to autumn 1999 the pictures were taken with a 35mm camera, the pictures were either scanned by myself or by the photo finisher when the film was developed. From autumn 1999 to June 2002 I used a Kodak DC265 digital camera (1 megapixel resolution). From June 2002 to July 2004 I used an Olympus Camedia E-10 with 4MP (not manufactured any more, replaced by the Olympus E-20P, 5MP). In November 2003 I added a Nikon Coolpix 3100, although this is only used for quick snapshots when the Olympus/Nikon D70 is too big to take with me.
My main camera is now the Nikon D70 Digital SLR with the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm Lens. A great camera I can recommend highly!
The graphics program I use is Paintshop Pro (currently version 8) while the panoramas are created with Panorama Factory (currently version 3.3).
I'd still like to contact you, how can I do this?
How quick can I expect a reply from you?
- Good question. Let me give you the "it depends" answer. First of all, I run this website (as well as my other websites) in my spare time. Meaning I might be busy with work or other things I do. Then I might be away, with no access to my e-mail. I might not be in the mood to answer, although that depends a lot on the tone and style of your e-mail. Anyway, the answer might be almost instantaneous (if I happen to be online and have the time to reply the minute your e-mail comes in), it might also take a few days or even a week or two (if I'm busy, need to research the answer or don't like the tone of your e-mail). In other words: It depends on a lot of factors.
