The Islay Beach Rugby tournament takes place annually in mid June on the beach outside the White Hart Hotel in Port Ellen. 32 teams (22 mens, 10 ladies) from all over Scotland (and hopefully soon further away) participate in the competition for the Laddie Cup (mens) and Lassie Cup (ladies) sponsored by Bruichladdich distillery. While the games are very competitive (some of the teams have current or former Scottish Internationals in their line up) it is also an important fun and social event on Islay. Various organisations use the day for charity fundraising and the Islay Pipe Band plays. I first visited the Islay Beach Rugby in 2009 and enjoyed it so much that I returned in 2010. With the page and the videos and picture galleries linked below I hope to give others a few impressions of the tournament. I hope to return to future events as well and might see you there? |

Islay Beach Rugby 2009
The third Islay Beach Rugby tournament on the 13th of June 2009 was my first visit to the event. The weather was sunny for most of the day, only interrupted by a short shower some time half way through the afternoon. The tournament was won by ‘Black Bottle’ for the mens and ‘Hillhead / Jordanhill RFC’ for the ladies. A gallery with pictures from the day is in preparation and will be linked here soon. Further videos are available with the Islay Beach Rugby Men's Final 2009 - 1st half and the Islay Beach Rugby Men's Final 2009 - 2nd half |

Islay Beach Rugby 2010
The second Islay Beach Rugby tournament I visited took place on the 12th of June 2010. My sister joined me for this visit from Germany. While not as sunny as the previous one the weather stayed dry the whole day and we had some sunny intervals. The Laddie Cup was won by the ’Ardbeg distillery‘ team while 2009 winners ‘Hillhead / Jordanhill RFC’ defended the Lassie Cup successfully. For 200 high resolution pictures of the event please go to the Islay Beach Rugby 2010 Picture Gallery. Further videos are planned and will be linked here once available. |
